In bigger strata developments, it may be difficult to keep up with all of the day-to-day decisions. However, it’s in your best interests to know what’s going on in your building so you can make your voice heard when necessary. How can you stay up-to-date with everything happening in your owners’ corporation?
1) Make sure you look out for meetings
There is a raft of ways your committee could choose to advertise AGMs and other meetings. As well as the traditional posters and flyers, if you have a young corporation, they may be communicating via email or social media too. Make sure you’re clear how your committee works so that you can keep an eye on the relevant board or forum.
2) Go along to more than just the AGM
If you only pop along to a meeting once a year, you won’t be making contact with the people who know what’s going on. While important decisions go through strict legal processes and you’ll be duly informed, by not attending other meetings, you miss out on an opportunity to contribute to casual discussions. Of course, it’s also a good opportunity to get to know your neighbours!
3) Contribute when you have the opportunity
No one wants to attend meetings and feel they’ve wasted their time. But a successful meeting depends on both a good agenda and attendee engagement. You should receive an agenda before the meeting, so try to go along prepared.
Getting involved in your owners’ corporation is a great way to make sure you love where you live.
